2010 WORLD CUP SOUTH AFRICA

I was asked by a few people if i'd write a blog for the World Cup, from fans who will be watching every kick to people who have no interest in football but know it can't be avoided and could read what i put to help them through or at least make them smile

The greatest World Cup goals ever

Today, taking a look at what wins football matches, goals! Or as they say in South America, goooooooooooooooooooooooaaallls! the classification for having a great goal, simply how cool it would be to repeat the goal on Fifa or Pro Evo, so here i have compiled the 20 greatest goals of all time from the World Cup finals, starting at:-

20. Manuel Negrete Arias, MEXICO vs. Bulgaria
15 June 1986, Azteca Stadium, Mexico City
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZM5Zf1dBqg

Lots of patient build up but some great skill, scoring this on FIFA would need great timing and fast button pressing, knowing that makes the goal even more impressive

19. David Platt, ENGLAND vs Belguim
26 June 1990, Renato Dall'Ara, Bologna
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtqiBAg2biw
The tension, scoring in the 119th minute, the last minute of extra time, simple long ball free kick but the technique to volley with the ball coming over his shoulder and to control it so well, tried on FIFA and went out for a throw in!

18. Karl-Heinze Rummenigge, Mexico vs WEST GERMANY
6th June 1978, Cordoba
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Y48BETvIS4
Was between Michael Owen against Argentina in 1998 but went for this one, mainly because of that man's afro at the beginning, it's amazing! bigger than Michael Owen in fact

17. Eder, BRAZIL vs U.S.S.R.
14th June 1982, Sanchez Pizjaun, Seville
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbj3MYBS7SI
Just the control to set himself up, beatifully chipped up to volley through the defence and past the keeper. Tried on Pro Evo, chipped up.....then had a headed shot from outside the box!

16. Jairzinho, Uruguay vs BRAZIL
17th June 1970, Jalisco, Guadalajara
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IV1E6vc5GTE
The control while holding off the player before placing the ball beautifully the other side of the keeper. Tried on Fifa and lost possesion outside the box then fouled him

15. Pele, BRAZIL vs Italy
21st June 1970, Azteca, Mexico City
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQtf-xKNQRI
Brazil 100th goal in World Cup football, scored by arguably their greatest (how quickly people forget Kleberson) player, Edson Arantes de Nascimento aka Pele. Quick throw in, good deep cross and perfect jump and placement from Pele. Tried this on Pro Evo and executed prefectly, crossed from a throw in and headed from Pele with Classic Brazil! i'm as good as Pele, now where's my chance to advertise erectle dysfunction tablets like he gets to?

14. Arie Haan, HOLLAND vs Italy
21st June 1978, Monumental, Buneos Aires
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hlvq2KQ4Y48
A very good long distance shot from 40 yards flying in off the post. Tried to do the same on FIFA and went for a goal kick.

13. Roberto Baggio, ITALY vs Czechoslovakia
19th June 1990, Stadio Olimpico, Rome
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paVHpTB_pGO
Brilliant drive from the left into the centre from 'The Divina Ponytail', the ball never seeming to leave his foot, beating 5 players then cooly slotting past the goalkeeper. Tried to copy on FIFA 09, got brought down outside the box, was playing against Leeds United though so to be expected

12. Diego Maradona, ARGENTINA vs Greece
21st June 1994, Foxboro, Boston
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHMJLyPEvra
Maradona's last goal in thw World Cup finals, banned shortly after for taking ephedrine, just look at those bulging eyes, that's why you shouldn't do drugs kids. No point trying that on FIFA WORLD CUP 2010, just played around trying to copy the goal celebration but can't get anything like it, who doesn't want to socre as Dimitar Berbatov and see him do that celebration, jsut any emotion from him at all! (Maradona was savaged by a rottweiler eariler this year, i like to think as it got angry and before it bit, it looked something like he did here)

11. Archie Gemmill, Holland vs. SCOTLAND
11th June 1978, Park General San Martin, Mendoza
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAw6LzPD87o
Brilliant turning through the Dutch defence, making the space to chip over the oncoming 'keeper, makes me think of Trainspotting every time. Tried three times on Pro Evo, tackled every time and lost possesion

10. Gerson, BRAZIL vs Italy
21st June 1970, Azteca, Mexico City
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UtIRBz_OG0
Brillaint teamplay and interpassing from Brazil with Gerson just pushing the ball to his left to create enough room to hammer into the net from outside the box. The 1970 Brazil team was all about teamplay and can see why. Tried on FIFA....WAY over the bar

9. Pele, Sweden vs Brazil
29th June 1958, Rasunda Solna, Stockholm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m15yryxTXCs
If your old enough, your good enough. A 17 year old Pele announces himself to the world scoring this, the third goal for his hat-trick against Sweden. The skill to chest past the first player, the confidence to chip over the second defender and the coolness to fire into the net, i didn't even try to score this goal to be honest

8. Paul Breitner, WEST GERMANY vs Chile
14th June 1974, Olympia, West Berlin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S29QN_gFeYc
The slow patient passing, the build up to the goal, no Chile player seems to get near the ball for the quality of the passing, then for bearded Marxist Paul Breitner to look up and score such a fabulous long range effort, qorth seeing again. Tried on Pro Evo, the passing bit is fine, long range effort....straight to the 'keeper, didn't even make him dive

7. Marco Tardelli, ITALY vs West Germany
11th July 1982, Bernabeu, Madrid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9c09P7dv28
superb passing to get towards the German goal, the ball coming to Tardelli on the edge of the box, controlling and making space with one touch, lunging and scoring in the bottom corner with the other, the importnace of the goal is shown in his celebration, he's just score the winning goal for Italy in the 1982 World Cup final. No chance of doing the first touch, tried with Ronaldo and Ronaldinho on FIFA but just not able to do it with so many defenders around me, tackled EVERY time!

6. Diego Maradona, ARGENTINA vs Belguim
25th June 1986, Azteca, Mexico City
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_8jK8RHbQM
What gets me about this goal is, there are two defenders and a goalkeeper between him and the goal, he has one touch and score, replays are needed to work out what the hell he did, amazing positioning, brilliant technique on the left foot, fantiastic finish. Tried to copy on Pro Evo, hard to get the same scenraio as this, and anytime close either intercepted or way wide of the goal

5. Saed Al-Owairan, Belguim vs SAUDI ARABIA
29th June 1994, RFK Memorial Stadium, Washington
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8w89sl7Grc
Just a great goal from such a good run, lucky with defenders moving for him and the ball forever landing at his feet at the end but still a delight to see. Can't recreate the good luck like he has on any game, can run and score but to bounce off a defenders shins at the end, i can't do that

4. Carlos Alberto, BRAZIL vs Italy
21st June 1970, Azteca, Mexico City
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HrjevD2vhk
Quite simply the greatest team goal ever scored, number 5 is Clodoaldo, dancing round players with the ball never leaving his laces, he passes to Rivelino, to Jairzinho, to Pele....it's Pele's pass that makes this an artform, look at his body shape as he passes it without even looking up, he knows precisely where Carlos albero is, not when he passes it, but where he will be that second after he's passed it. tried to recreate, team play and passing can be done and if can get a break, the shot always goes wide, really shouldn't bother trying to emulate a goal of this quality.

3. Estaban Cambiasso, ARGENTINA vs Serbia & Montegro
17th June 2006, Germany
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6R_iYLca2gc
Really wanted to put this at number one, the team work is the best i can think off, how many passes? i lost count at 25, the Serbians never looking like getting a tackle in, the forward play, the backheel.....delightful goal, a pleasure to watch again. Tried on Pro Evo without all the passing malarky, backheeling in the box is the hard part but did it and with the shot hit the cross bar

2. Diego Maradona, ARGENTINA vs England
22nd June 1986, Azteca, Mexico City
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jk-kXwjASEE
The most dazzling single perfomance of any goal, Maradona beat the entire England team single handedly(pun intended) in this match, look at the goal again, amzing talent, should of just hacked him down, hindsight is a wonderful thing. Now this goal i did socre on Pro Evo, maybe not as skillfully with the tricks but picked the ball up, beat every player and took it round the 'keeper and tapped in, with Maradona as well....but not against England, against Albania

1. Dennis Bergkamp, Argentina vs HOLLAND
4th July 1998, Velodrome, Marseille
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqvZIqMUyps
The long pass, 50 yards from Frank De Boer, amazing pass and pin point to Bergkamp, but it's all about Bergkamp, the control, first touch to bring it down dead as a stone, second touch to take it inside the onrushing Ayala and the finish with the outside of the boot, not to mention it was scored in the 90th minute of a quarterfinal to win 2-1! i remember watching this at the time and standing up with my mouth wide open in amazement and begging for a replay to make sure i had seen it correctly
No game even can try to recreate this, can pass and try to control, the touch and finish.....maybe on PlayStation 4
