2010 WORLD CUP SOUTH AFRICA

I was asked by a few people if i'd write a blog for the World Cup, from fans who will be watching every kick to people who have no interest in football but know it can't be avoided and could read what i put to help them through or at least make them smile

The greatest World Cup ever?

Today's post is to look at the greatest World Cup finals of all time, seems to easy to say Italia 90, England 66, or USA 94 (I'm kidding about the last one obviously, the highlight of that tournament was Diana Ross attempting to take a penalty in the opening ceremony......unless your Irish of course, beating the Italians may be a bit more remembered), so i've decided to break it down to individual awards, bit like the Oscars but without the pomp and pagentry (and actual awards)

Best soundtrack

No contest for this one, not only the greatest football song ever recorded but also the tune that was shown over the credits on the BBC at the time. Italia 90, the year an inspired England team reached the semi finals to the sound of Pavarotti's Nessun Dorma, a song that got so ingrained in peoples minds, it got to no. 2 in the charts, the highest ever for a classical song, the song that beat it, the simply magnificent World In Motion by New Order, complete with John Barnes rap. The fact that a football tournament inspired these two songs to get to the top of the charts shows how great that summers soccer soundtrack was and every World Cup song by the England team since has been compared to World In Motion, sat watching in now, the video may be dated )and Chris Waddle's mullet is just shameful) but the song itself, just awesome

There have been some awful songs, the one the pregnant Spice Girls did in 98, in 86 the England team sang 'We've Got The Whole World At Our Feet' to the tune of 'He's got the whole world in his hands' ironic as Maradona didn't have the whole world in his hands in that tournament, just the ball. the most bizarre World Cup song has to of come from the German team for USA 94 when they teamed with The Village People for 'Far Away In America' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dla9yLGq3XE Why the German team needed to pair up with perennial 'artists' The Village People i don't know, the fact the song is in English baffles me, maybe it's to atone for invading other countries all those years ago, they lost the war and instead of us speaking German, they're singing English!? They also covered Three Lions in 1998, talk about recycling!!! come over here, stealing our songs (and winning the tournament it was originally released for!)

Best Haircut

No competition this one, will mention Keegan's perm, Bobby Charltons comb over , the Romanians all bleach dying their hair at France 98, Roberto Baggio's ponytail, David Seaman's ponytail, Taribo West (remember him? no me neither) but one man towers, well his hair does at least, over everyone else, Colombia's Carlos Valderrama. To describe it, well, if you know him you'll agree, if not Google him and see for yourself, there's species of birds and insects in that hair waiting to be discovered, his hair was best at USA 94

Worst kit
This summer New Zealand will be dressed like referees, Ghana like the Spanish flag and Slovenia's is more green than The Incredible Hulk. Let's not forget England bright white polo shirt will be giving Daz a test on it's grass stains but worst kits ever? Cameroon's 2002 effort was so skin tight, they forgot to add sleeves, Mexico's 1998 kit was kind of top that looked like some kid had gone mad with the green crayons but by far are the errrr, distinctly colourful (that's being polite) kits worn by Mexico's great Jorge Campos, their goalkeeper for USA 94 and France 98, so bright and more colourful than Gordon Ramsey's language, they made people wish they were colourblind
and so this list will go on, if anyone has any thoughts on these or future categories please let me know to discuss
